SITU Fabrication was brought on as a specialty consultant and contractor to engineer and oversee the construction of this high profile lobby installation.Working closely with James Turrell's design team, we arrived at a 24' tall, 2-story volume with a seamless GFRG interior and a polished solid surface exterior. In addition to serving as lead coordinator, SITU also fabricated the thermoformed solid surface exterior cladding, all the molds for GFRG production, and any templates and precision mounting brackets.
I was responsible for all CNC operations, which included hiring, training and managing two CNC operators to run the machine for 16 continuous hours a day, which was necessary for this project. Simultaneously, I worked with the project leads to ensure that all deadlines were met. In addition, I engineered the foam molds that were used to cast the GFRG panels on the interior. I was responsible for programming all assets of the project, including each unique foam mold, many of which were larger than the machine and weighed upwards of 500lbs. These pieces needed to be rotated and re-referenced on the CNC machine with zero loss in accuracy.
